Why is the planche so hard?
The planche is hard because you hold your whole body parallel to the floor on straight arms, with no leg support, so your shoulders and elbows resist an enormous leverage penalty. The further your feet sit from your hands, the longer the lever, which is why moving the legs closer, by tucking or straddling, makes early versions possible.
Mechanically the planche is a straight-arm push against gravity. Because the elbows stay locked, the muscles cannot share load with a bending joint the way they do in a push-up, so the biceps tendon, the anterior shoulder and the wrists carry a stubborn, near-isometric load. It also demands the opposite scapular action to its cousin the front lever: you protract, pushing the shoulder blades apart and down, rather than retracting them. That protraction leans heavily on the serratus anterior, and a systematic review of closed-chain shoulder exercises confirms the serratus is a primary driver of scapular control in exactly this kind of pushing position. The planche is not a stronger push-up. It is a straight-arm lever skill, closer in spirit to a lever hold than to a press, so it trains as a static hold that you shorten and lengthen by changing leg position, not by adding reps.
What are the prerequisites?
Before drilling planche shapes, earn four things: a 30-60 second planche lean, 8-10 pseudo-planche push-ups, straight-arm protracted support holds, and a base of full-range dips and pike push-ups. A clean 10-15 second tuck planche is the checkpoint that says you are genuinely ready to start climbing the ladder.
These standards are not gatekeeping for its own sake. Each one prepares a specific tissue or pattern the planche will hammer, so arriving with them in the bank is what lets you progress without your elbows or wrists forcing a stop. You do not need a freestanding handstand to start, but comfortable pike push-ups, full-range dips and honest push-up strength mean you are stacking the planche leverage penalty on top of real pushing capacity, not borrowing from a weak base. How do you prep the wrists and elbows?
Prep the wrists and elbows every single session, because the planche loads a deeply extended wrist and a straightened elbow under full bodyweight. Warm the wrists with extension and flexion rocks, strengthen the forearms with loaded wrist curls, and feed the biceps tendon with slow tempo curls before you ever attempt a hard hold.
This is the part impatient athletes skip and then pay for. Straight-arm loading concentrates stress on the tendon and joint capsule, and connective tissue simply adapts more slowly than muscle. A systematic review and meta-analysis by Bohm and colleagues found that tendon adapts to mechanical loading over weeks and months, and that the stimulus which drives that adaptation is high, progressively applied strain, not sudden spikes in load. [1] In plain terms: the muscle may feel ready to push harder long before the tendon is, so your job is to hold the reins.

Add loaded forearm work such as wrist curls and reverse wrist curls two or three times a week. If the floor angle bites, train on parallettes or fists to reduce wrist extension while you build tolerance. Sharp or lingering pain is a stop signal, not something to push through.
Why is the planche lean the key drill?
The planche lean is the highest-value planche drill because it rehearses the exact positions the skill needs: straight arms, protracted shoulder blades, a deep wrist angle and shoulders shifted forward past the hands. From a plank, you lean your shoulders past your wrists until the arms load hard, and a 30-60 second hold is the readiness gate for the whole ladder.
Treat the lean as a slider for difficulty: the further forward you push your shoulders, the harder it gets, so you can dial the exact intensity you can hold with clean form. Keep the elbow pits rotated forward, the shoulder blades pushed apart, and the hips in line, then add pseudo-planche push-ups as your straight-arm-adjacent pressing driver. Comparative EMG work on scapular stabilisers shows that protraction-biased exercises preferentially recruit the serratus anterior, which is exactly the muscle a strong lean is teaching you to own. Practitioner cue, not lab data: we tell athletes to imagine pushing the floor away and down at the same time. If your hips sag or your elbows flicker, you have leaned past your current strength. Back off two centimetres and hold that.
Pseudo-planche push-ups, with the hands drawn back toward the hips and the torso leaning forward, extend the same pattern under movement. They are not a formal library exercise, so log them as a custom lift, but eight to ten controlled reps are worth more than a dozen shallow ones. Keep the range honest and the arms as straight as the movement allows.
How much straight-arm scapular strength do you need?
You need enough straight-arm scapular strength to hold a firmly protracted, depressed shoulder position for 20-30 seconds under load, because the planche is stabilised by pushing the shoulder blades apart and down rather than by bracing them. Weak protraction is why many athletes with strong push-ups still collapse into a planche.
Straight-arm strength is its own quality. You can bench a respectable load and still lack the protracted-support endurance the planche demands, because that pattern is rarely trained directly. Build it with protracted support holds on parallettes or rings, straight-arm scapular push-ups, and the lean itself. The serratus anterior is the workhorse here, and the closed-chain review noted earlier ranks these pushing positions among the best ways to bias it. [3]
Because these holds are isometric, they follow the rules of isometric training. Oranchuk and colleagues' systematic review found that isometric strength gains are strongest at, and specific to, the joint angle you train, and that longer-duration holds with real intent drive meaningful adaptation. [2] The practical takeaway: train the exact shapes you want to own, hold them with genuine tension, and do not expect a bench press to transfer for free. A little hollow-body and core work rounds out the rigidity the parallel position asks for.
What is the planche ladder?
The planche ladder is a sequence of shapes that shorten or lengthen the lever: frog stand, tuck planche, advanced tuck planche, straddle planche, an optional half-lay, then full planche. You hold each rung cleanly for 10-15 seconds across three sets before advancing, and the tuck-to-advanced-tuck jump is the longest stay for most athletes.
The whole ladder is one idea: bring the mass closer to your shoulders to make it lighter, then progressively push it further away. A tuck planche keeps the knees pulled in tight; opening the hips into an advanced tuck lengthens the lever dramatically; a straddle planche straightens the legs but spreads them wide to keep mass near the shoulders; and the full planche brings everything into one straight, parallel line. A word on honesty here: a 10-second hold with sagging hips and bent elbows is not the same rung as a 10-second hold that is flat, parallel and locked. Judge yourself against the criterion column, film your sets from the side, and only advance when the shape is genuinely clean. This is where progressive overload lives for a static skill, in longer lever and cleaner shape, not more weight.
How do you program the static holds?
Program the planche as frequent, short, high-quality static holds: 5-15 seconds per set, four to six sets in your target shape for roughly 40-60 seconds of total time, three to five times a week. Stop each set with a second or two in reserve, before the shape breaks, and rest two to three minutes between efforts.
Static skill rewards frequency over savagery. Because each hold is short and you rest fully, you can revisit the pattern often without the deep muscular fatigue of heavy lifting, and that frequent, clean exposure is what grooves the position. It also keeps individual sessions well below the connective-tissue stress that a few grinding failure holds would inflict.

Two refinements matter as you advance. First, hold with intent: Oranchuk's review found that maximal-intent isometrics drive more adaptation than lazy holds, so brace hard even in an easy shape. [2] Second, remember that time under tension is a tool with limits; more seconds is not automatically better, and Schoenfeld's meta-analysis on repetition duration found no advantage to artificially dragging tension out once quality is met. What are the common sticking points?
The most common planche sticking points are stalling at the advanced tuck, holding a strong tuck but a weak straddle, elbows that quietly bend under load, and wrist or biceps-tendon pain that forces a stop. Each traces to a specific, fixable weakness rather than a lack of general strength.
- Stuck at the advanced tuck. This is the biggest leverage jump in the ladder, so a long stay is normal. Add a partial by opening the hips a few degrees at a time, and keep hammering the lean.
- Tuck fine, straddle collapses. A big gap between a tuck and a straddle usually means a lean and protraction deficit, not weak legs. Push your planche-lean intensity up and hold protracted support longer.
- Elbows bend under load. A telltale sign you are borrowing bent-arm strength. Regress a rung, drill straight-arm support holds, and keep the elbow pits rotated forward and locked.
- Wrist or elbow pain. Nearly always under-preparation or too fast a load jump. Return to the prep section, use parallettes to ease the wrist angle, and give the tendon weeks, not days.
When a rung stalls for more than a few weeks with no niggles, change one variable, not five: add a set, lengthen the hold by a second or two, or nudge the lever slightly longer. What are the biggest mistakes?
The mistakes that stall a planche are almost always the same handful: rushing to the full skill, bending the elbows, skipping wrist and elbow prep, letting the hips pike, retracting instead of protracting, and never deloading. Fix these before chasing any fancy variation.
- Chasing the full planche too early. — Skipping the tuck and advanced-tuck rungs to grind a straddle you cannot hold cleanly trains a bent-arm, piked cheat. Earn 3 x 10-15 s at each rung first.
- Bending the elbows under load. — A planche is a straight-arm skill. If your elbows fold, you lack straight-arm strength, not planche strength. Regress a rung and drill planche leans and support holds.
- Ignoring wrist and elbow prep. — The deep wrist extension and biceps-tendon load are the most common injury sites. Prep every session and progress load slowly, because tendon adapts slower than muscle.
- Letting the hips pike up. — A high, piked hip shortens the lever and hides a weakness. Cue protraction and a forward lean until the body is truly parallel to the floor.
- Retracting instead of protracting. — The planche wants the shoulder blades pushed apart and down. Squeezing them together (retraction) is a front-lever cue and will stall your planche.
- No deload and endless max holds. — Straight-arm work is connective-tissue heavy. Grinding failure holds daily invites tendinopathy. Program a lighter week every 4-6 weeks.
None of these are exotic, and that is the point. The planche rewards patience with connective tissue and honesty with your shapes over months, not clever hacks. Can I train the planche if I cannot hold a handstand?

Is the straddle planche much easier than the full planche?
Considerably. Spreading the legs wide moves mass closer to the shoulders and shortens the lever arm, so the straddle can feel dramatically lighter than a full planche at the same bodyweight. Most athletes hold a straddle for months or years before the legs come together into a clean full planche.
Should I use parallettes or the floor for planche work?
Both work, and each has a role. Parallettes reduce the wrist-extension angle and let you drop into deeper shapes, which is gentler on cranky wrists. Floor work builds the raw wrist tolerance you will eventually want. Many athletes rotate between them, favouring parallettes when wrists are tender.
