Cable Crossover

The cable crossover is an isolation push exercise that targets the pectoralis major by pulling two cable handles across and down (or up) in front of your body. Stand between the pulleys, step slightly forward, and sweep the handles together under constant tension to build a strong chest squeeze.

The cable crossover is a chest-isolation staple in almost every commercial gym, prized for the constant tension cables provide compared with dumbbells or a barbell. Because you can set the pulleys high, low, or in between, it's one of the few chest exercises that lets you deliberately target the upper, middle or lower pectoral fibers in the same session. How do you do the cable crossover?

To do the Cable Crossover: set both pulleys to the height that matches your target (high for lower-chest emphasis, low for upper-chest emphasis, or mid-height for an even middle-chest hit); grab a handle in each hand, step forward to the center of the machine, and stagger your stance slightly for balance; start with your arms out to the sides and a slight bend in the elbows, feeling a stretch across your chest; keeping that same slight elbow bend fixed, sweep the handles down and across (or up and across, depending on pulley height) in a wide arc.

  1. Set both pulleys to the height that matches your target (high for lower-chest emphasis, low for upper-chest emphasis, or mid-height for an even middle-chest hit).
  2. Grab a handle in each hand, step forward to the center of the machine, and stagger your stance slightly for balance.
  3. Start with your arms out to the sides and a slight bend in the elbows, feeling a stretch across your chest.
  4. Keeping that same slight elbow bend fixed, sweep the handles down and across (or up and across, depending on pulley height) in a wide arc.
  5. Bring the handles together in front of your body, squeezing your chest hard, without letting your hands cross excessively past the midline.

What are the key cable crossover form cues?

Small step forward
Step just slightly forward of the pulleys — you don't need to walk to the middle of the room. Overstepping pulls the cables into an inefficient angle.
Fixed elbow bend
Keep a slight, constant bend in your elbows throughout, the same rule as a dumbbell fly — the movement happens at the shoulder, not the elbow.
Press up and back, not just forward
Drive the hands slightly up and back into the contraction rather than straight forward, which keeps tension on the chest instead of the front delts.
Torso lean
A slight forward lean from the hips (bent-forward cable crossover) increases pectoralis activation compared with standing bolt upright.
Controlled return

Breathing & tempo: Inhale as you let the handles return to the stretch, and exhale as you sweep them together into the squeeze. A 2–1–2 tempo (2s out, 1s squeeze, 2s back) keeps tension on the chest and stops the weight stack from controlling the rep.

How should you warm up for the cable crossover?

Run 1–2 light sets of 15 reps at each pulley height you plan to train that session, focusing on the arc and elbow angle rather than weight. A few band pull-aparts beforehand help prime the shoulders for the stretched start position.

What are the most common cable crossover mistakes?

  • Walking too far forward from the pulleys — A small step forward is enough. Walking to the middle of the room pulls the cable angle too steep and reduces horizontal tension on the chest.
  • Pressing straight forward instead of up and back into the squeeze — Angle the finish slightly up and back toward the contraction rather than punching straight ahead, which shifts load onto the front delts.
