What is Block periodization?
Block periodization is a way of organizing a training plan into consecutive blocks, each built around one primary training quality instead of trying to develop strength, hypertrophy, endurance and power all at the same time. A typical sequence for a strength athlete might run a hypertrophy-focused block, then a strength-focused block, then a short power or peaking block before competition. Each block still contains some maintenance work for the other qualities, but the emphasis is concentrated so the athlete adapts faster to the block's main target before diminishing returns set in.
How it works
Block periodization works by exploiting the fact that highly concentrated training on a narrow set of qualities produces a stronger, faster adaptation than spreading the same volume across many qualities at once — but that adaptation also fades quickly once the stimulus is removed, a phenomenon researchers call the residual training effect. Vladimir Issurin's model names three block types: an accumulation block (high volume, general work — usually hypertrophy or work capacity), a transmutation block (more specific, higher-intensity work converting that base into sport-specific strength or power), and a realization block (low volume, high intensity, tapering fatigue so the adaptations show up as performance). Blocks are sequenced so each one's residual effect carries into the next, rather than training everything concurrently and diluting the stimulus for each quality.

How to apply it
- Pick one dominant quality per block: Choose a single primary adaptation (e.g. hypertrophy, then max strength, then power) instead of training everything hard in the same weeks.
- Sequence, don't mix: Order blocks so each one's residual effect (the fitness that lingers after the block ends) feeds into the next — accumulation before transmutation before realization.
- Keep minimal doses of other qualities: Maintain, don't develop, secondary qualities during a block with a small amount of low-volume work so they don't fully detrain.
- Taper into a realization block: Drop volume sharply and hold intensity in the final 1-2 weeks before a test or meet so fatigue clears and strength or power can peak.
Worked example
Say a powerlifter has 12 weeks until a meet. Block periodization might split that into three 4-week blocks, each with a different focus.

- "It's only for elite athletes." The underlying idea (sequence rather than mix) helps any lifter beyond the beginner stage; the complexity should scale down for recreational lifters.
- "Longer blocks are always better." Each block's residual training effect fades — accumulation-block fitness lingers only a few weeks — so blocks that run too long past their intended focus waste the sequencing benefit.
