What is DOTS score?

The DOTS score is a bodyweight-adjusted coefficient that multiplies a powerlifter's total by a polynomial-derived factor, built from modern drug-tested Raw competition data, to compare relative strength across weight classes and sexes on one scale.

What is DOTS score?

The DOTS score is a single bodyweight-adjusted number that lets you rank powerlifters against each other regardless of weight class, using a formula built specifically from current, drug-tested Raw lifting data. It answers the same question as the older Wilks score — 'who had the best total relative to their bodyweight?' — but with coefficients recalculated from modern competition results instead of the equipped-lifting data Wilks was originally built on.

How it works

DOTS works by running your bodyweight through a fourth-degree polynomial to produce a denominator, then dividing 500 by that denominator and multiplying the result by your total (in kg). Because the underlying dataset is drug-tested Raw results rather than 1990s equipped totals, DOTS tends to track more accurately with what a modern natural, unequipped lifter can actually total at a given bodyweight — one of the main complaints that pushed federations away from Wilks in the first place.

The formula

DOTS score = total (kg) × 500 / (a·BW⁴ + b·BW³ + c·BW² + d·BW + e)

BW is bodyweight in kg; a-e are sex-specific constants published by the formula's creator. As with Wilks, no one calculates this by hand — meet software and online calculators do the polynomial math instantly from your bodyweight, sex and total.

How to apply it

  • Rank a meet regardless of weight class: Multiply each lifter's total by their DOTS coefficient and the highest score wins 'Best Lifter,' the same job Wilks used to do.
  • Compare across federations: USPA and WRPF meets typically post DOTS on the scoreboard alongside kg totals, so lifters from different weight classes can be ranked on one leaderboard.
  • Benchmark your own strength standard: A DOTS score in the mid-300s to 400s is commonly used as a rough 'intermediate to advanced Raw lifter' benchmark, independent of bodyweight.
  • Track progress after a weight-class change: If you cut or bulk between meets, comparing DOTS scores (not just kg totals) shows whether you actually got relatively stronger.

Worked example

Say two Raw lifters compete in the same USPA meet: a 67.5 kg lifter totals 500 kg and an 83 kg lifter totals 620 kg. Here's how DOTS compares them.

By goal

  • USPA/WRPF competitors: Check your federation's rulebook — most modern Raw federations default to DOTS for Best Lifter awards, so that's the number worth tracking meet to meet.
  • Lifters comparing historical records: Older meet results are usually posted in Wilks, not DOTS, so compare like-for-like when looking at all-time rankings.

Common misconceptions

  • "DOTS and Wilks always rank lifters the same way." Because the two formulas are built from different datasets and different polynomials, they can rank the same pair of totals in a different order, especially at the extreme ends of the bodyweight range.
  • "DOTS replaced Wilks everywhere." USPA and WRPF adopted DOTS, but IPF-affiliated federations (including USAPL) use IPF GL Points instead, and some smaller federations still default to Wilks.
  • "A DOTS score close to 500 is normal for a serious lifter." A DOTS score near 500 is elite/world-class territory — most competitive intermediate Raw lifters sit in the 300s to low 400s.

Does USAPL use DOTS?

No — USAPL, as an IPF affiliate, uses IPF GL Points for its official rankings and Best Lifter awards, not DOTS. DOTS is the primary formula for federations like USPA and WRPF.
