What is Natural Bodybuilding?

Natural bodybuilding is a category of bodybuilding competition in which athletes compete without anabolic steroids or other banned performance-enhancing drugs, verified through drug testing such as polygraph exams, urinalysis, and multi-year drug-free periods enforced by federations like the WNBF and NANBF.

What is Natural Bodybuilding?

Natural bodybuilding is a branch of the sport where every competitor on stage has to prove, usually through a polygraph test, a urine sample, or both, that they haven't used anabolic steroids, growth hormone, or other substances on the federation's banned list. It exists specifically to separate athletes building their physiques through training, nutrition, and genetics alone from those using performance-enhancing drugs, since the visual and performance differences between the two groups can be significant. Natural isn't a single universal standard, each federation, like the WNBF or NANBF, sets and enforces its own banned-substance list and testing protocol, so a competitor considered natural by one organization's standard might not qualify under a stricter one.

How it works

Natural bodybuilding federations enforce their drug-free standard through a combination of testing methods: urinalysis screens for banned substances and metabolites, polygraph exams ask competitors direct questions about past drug use, and some federations add blood or hair sampling for longer detection windows. Rules typically require years of documented abstinence from anabolic agents before a competitor is even eligible, some federations require a decade or more drug-free from prescription-strength hormones and shorter periods, often 1-2 years, from over-the-counter pro-hormone-type supplements. A failed test for anabolic agents, growth hormone, peptides, or SARMs typically results in disqualification and can carry a lifetime ban from future competition with that federation.

How to apply it

  • Urinalysis: A urine sample is tested for banned substances and their metabolites, often on competition day.
  • Polygraph exam: Some federations require competitors to pass a lie-detector test about past PED use as a condition of competing or placing.
  • Documented drug-free period: Competitors must show a multi-year, sometimes lifetime, history free of banned anabolic substances before they're eligible.
  • Blood/hair testing: A minority of federations add these for longer detection windows than urine alone provides.

Worked example

A lifter wants to compete in their first WNBF-affiliated natural show.

StepRequirementPurpose
1. Eligibility checkConfirm years drug-free from anabolic agents meets the federation's minimumEstablishes baseline eligibility before entering
2. Sign up & competeRegister, compete in their classStandard competition process
3. Post-show testingUrinalysis and/or polygraph for placing competitorsVerifies natural status before results are finalized
4. Results confirmedPlacement stands only after passing testingProtects the integrity of the drug-tested category

Placements in natural federations are typically provisional until post-show testing clears the competitor — a failed test can change the final results.

Natural bodybuilding vs open (pro) bodybuilding

Natural bodybuildingOpen / pro bodybuilding
Drug testingYes — polygraph, urinalysis, etc.No routine PED testing (e.g., IFBB Pro League)
Typical muscle mass on stageSmaller, attainable through training aloneOften significantly larger due to PED use
FederationsWNBF, NANBF, INBF, OCB, othersIFBB Pro League and other open federations

Both categories judge the same criteria, muscularity, symmetry, conditioning, the difference is entirely in what's allowed to build the physique.

Common misconceptions

  • "'Natural' means the same thing at every federation." Each natural federation sets its own banned-substance list and drug-free time requirements, so standards genuinely differ between organizations like the WNBF and NANBF.
  • "Passing a natural drug test guarantees zero PED use ever." Testing, urinalysis, polygraph, sometimes blood or hair, reduces but can't perfectly eliminate PED use — it's a strong deterrent and screening tool, not an absolute guarantee, which is why federations combine multiple test types.
  • "Natural bodybuilders can't build significant muscle." Natural competitors regularly build substantial, competition-level muscle over years of training — the ceiling is lower and the timeline longer than with PEDs, but natural muscle growth is far from trivial.

Natural Bodybuilding FAQ

What does 'natural' mean in bodybuilding?

It means a competitor has qualified under a federation's drug-tested standard, proving through methods like polygraph exams and urinalysis that they haven't used anabolic steroids or other banned performance-enhancing drugs.

What are the major natural bodybuilding federations?

The WNBF (World Natural Bodybuilding Federation) and NANBF (North American Natural Bodybuilding Federation) are two of the largest, alongside others like INBF and OCB, each with its own testing protocol and banned-substance list.

How do natural bodybuilding federations test for drugs?

Common methods include urinalysis for banned substances and metabolites, polygraph exams asking directly about past PED use, and in some federations, blood or hair sampling for longer detection windows.

How long do you have to be drug-free to compete natural?

Requirements vary by federation and substance, but many require several years to a lifetime drug-free from prescription-strength anabolic hormones, and shorter periods, often 1-2 years, from over-the-counter pro-hormone-type supplements.

Is natural bodybuilding the same as regular bodybuilding?

The judging criteria, muscularity, symmetry, conditioning, are the same, but natural bodybuilding adds mandatory drug testing, which typically results in smaller average muscle mass on stage compared with tested-free open or pro divisions.
