Worked example (male): 178 cm ÷ 17 cm wrist = 10.5 → just above 10.4, a small-to-medium frame. A thicker 18.5 cm wrist gives 178 ÷ 18.5 = 9.6, right on the medium/large line. How do I measure my wrist for body frame?

Wrap a flexible tape measure around your dominant wrist, just below the wrist bone (the styloid process) toward the hand — the narrowest point. Keep the tape snug but not tight enough to compress the skin. Record it in centimetres or inches. This wrist circumference, compared to your height, is what determines your frame size.

What is the height-to-wrist ratio?

The height-to-wrist ratio divides your height by your wrist circumference, both in the same units. A higher ratio means a thinner wrist relative to your height — a small frame; a lower ratio means a thicker wrist — a large frame. For men, above 10.4 is small, 9.6 to 10.4 is medium, and below 9.6 is large. Women's thresholds run a little higher: above 11.0 small, 10.1 to 11.0 medium, below 10.1 large.

Why does body frame size matter?

Frame size explains part of why two people the same height can healthily weigh different amounts. Someone with a large frame carries more bone and structural mass, so their healthy weight and their "ideal weight" both sit higher than a small-framed person of the same height. It helps you interpret a BMI or ideal-weight figure sensibly rather than treating one number as universal.

Does body frame size change?

No. Your skeletal frame is fixed once you reach adulthood — bone width does not change with diet or training. Your wrist circumference can shift very slightly with overall body fat or fluid, but your underlying frame category is stable. That is exactly why the wrist, which carries little fat or muscle, is used as the reference point.
