Steps to calories calculator — how many burned.
This steps to calories calculator converts your daily steps into calories burned. It estimates
your stride from your height, turns steps into distance and walking time, then applies the MET
formula — MET × 3.5 × kg ÷ 200 × minutes — using your weight and pace. It is an
honest estimate, not an exact reading. Enter your details below, no signup.
This is an estimate. Real burn varies by roughly ±10–15% with terrain, gait, fitness, load, and exact pace. Stride is inferred from height and walking time from cadence, so use the number for trends, not a precise ledger.
| Steps | Distance | Walking time | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2,500 | — km | — min | — kcal |
| 5,000 | — km | — min | — kcal |
| 7,500 | — km | — min | — kcal |

The step-to-calorie math, written out.
No black box. Steps become distance and time, then the MET formula turns that into calories.
stride = height × 0.415 / 0.413 Stride length in metres is height_cm ÷ 100 × 0.415 for men, 0.413 for women. Distance is steps × stride ÷ 1000 km.
MET × 3.5 × kg / 200 × min Minutes come from cadence — ~100 steps/min casual, ~120 brisk. MET is 3.5 for a casual walk, 5.0 for a brisk one.
estimate · ±10–15% Real burn swings with terrain, gait, fitness, and pace. For the average person 10,000 steps ≈ 350–450 kcal. Treat it as a range.
Worked example. An 80 kg man, 178 cm, walking 10,000 steps at a casual pace: stride ≈ 0.74 m, so 10,000 steps ≈ 7.4 km. At ~100 steps/min that is about 100 minutes. Calories ≈ 3.5 × 3.5 × 80 ÷ 200 × 100 ≈ 408 kcal. MET values are from the Compendium of Physical Activities; the 0.415 / 0.413 stride factors are the standard height-to-stride ratios.
Built for anyone counting steps.
If you watch a step count, this puts a calorie number behind it.
- Step-trackers. You hit a daily step goal on a watch or phone and want to know roughly what that movement is worth in calories.
- Walkers. Walking is your main activity, and you want an honest sense of the burn from a 5,000, 10,000, or 15,000-step day.
- NEAT-focused fat loss. You are leaning on non-exercise movement to widen your calorie deficit and want to see how added steps add up.

How many calories does 10,000 steps burn?
For an average adult, 10,000 steps burns roughly 350 to 450 calories, depending on body weight, stride length, and pace. A heavier or taller person covers more ground per step and burns more; a lighter, shorter person burns less. This calculator estimates it from your actual weight, height, and walking pace rather than a one-size figure — but treat the number as a range, not a precise reading.
How are steps converted to calories?
First your stride length is estimated from height — about 0.415 times height in metres for men and 0.413 for women — which turns your step count into a distance. Walking time is estimated from cadence (about 100 steps per minute at a casual pace, 120 when brisk). Calories then come from the MET formula: MET × 3.5 × body-weight-in-kg ÷ 200 × minutes, using a MET of ~3.5 for a casual walk and ~5.0 for a brisk one.
How accurate is a steps to calories calculator?
It is a solid estimate, but expect real burn to vary by about 10 to 15 percent. The math cannot see terrain, gait efficiency, fitness level, load carried, or exact pace, and stride length is inferred from height rather than measured. Use it to compare days and track trends, not as a calorie ledger down to the last kilocalorie. If you want more precision, measure your own stride and log your true walking speed.
How many steps to burn 500 calories?
For most people that is roughly 11,000 to 14,000 steps, or about 8 to 10 km of walking — but it depends heavily on your weight and pace. A heavier person or a brisk walker hits 500 calories in fewer steps; a lighter, casual walker needs more. Enter your details above and read the result table to see how your own step counts map to calories.
Do steps count as exercise for weight loss?
Yes — daily steps are a large part of NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis), the movement that is not formal training, and NEAT can swing daily burn by hundreds of calories between two similar people. Walking will not out-pace a poor diet, but consistently adding a few thousand steps a day meaningfully raises your total burn and supports a calorie deficit. Pair it with a calorie target for fat loss.
Should I add walking calories on top of my TDEE?
Usually not, if your activity level already reflects a typical amount of walking — that burn is baked into your maintenance number. Double-counting steps you already accounted for inflates your intake and stalls progress. Use this calculator to understand where step calories come from, then set one honest activity level in the TDEE or calorie calculator and eat to that.
