Where does it fall short for strength training?

The core problem is that a wrist device sees motion and heart rate, not intent or load. A heavy triple and a light set of ten can look almost identical to an accelerometer, and neither tells the watch you added 5 kg. That is not a knock on Apple specifically; it is a limitation of wrist wearables in general. But it does mean the watch cannot answer the one question that matters for building muscle and strength: are the numbers going up? How accurate is heart rate during heavy sets?

Apple Watch heart rate is accurate at rest and during steady cardio but noticeably less reliable during heavy sets. Wrist flexion, a tight bar grip and very short high-effort bursts disrupt the optical sensor, so readings lag and often undershoot the true value during near-maximal strength work — the exact moments you might most want a number.

Are the calorie numbers accurate for resistance training?

No. Apple Watch calorie estimates for resistance training are rough, not precise. Active energy is modelled mainly from heart rate and motion, and lifting is a stop-start effort that fools both — a heavy grind barely moves the wrist, and the sensor cannot see the raised metabolism after a hard set. Use the number as a weekly trend only.

Validation research backs this caution. A Stanford study across several wrist devices found heart rate was measured reasonably well but energy expenditure was estimated poorly, with large errors across every device tested. How is the battery and everyday practicality?

Battery life and durability vary by Apple Watch model, so check your specific watch rather than trusting a blanket figure. In practice a single strength session, even with the always-on display active, comfortably fits within a full charge for most lifters. The bigger practical concerns are protecting the case from bars and keeping the band snug.
