What is RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion)?

RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) is a 1-10 scale that measures how hard a set of resistance training felt, where 10 means you could not have done another rep and lower numbers mean reps were left in the tank.

What is RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion)?

RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) is a subjective 1-10 rating of how hard a set felt, used to gauge training intensity without needing to test a true one-rep max. A set rated RPE 10 was taken to failure; RPE 8 means you stopped with roughly two reps left. Because it is based on feel rather than a fixed percentage, RPE lets you adjust the weight on the bar to how you are actually recovering that day, not just what a spreadsheet says you should lift.

How it works

RPE works by asking you to estimate, immediately after a set, how many more reps you could have completed with good form. That estimate maps onto a 1-10 scale, which coaches then use to prescribe or cap effort instead of (or alongside) a fixed percentage of your one-rep max. Because fatigue, sleep, stress and nutrition all change how heavy a given weight feels day to day, RPE adjusts the target in real time — a concept called autoregulation — rather than forcing the same absolute load every session regardless of how you feel.

How to apply it

  • Cap your top set: Prescribe a target like "squat 5 reps @ RPE 8" instead of a fixed kg number, so the actual weight moves with how you feel that day.
  • Autoregulate week to week: If last week's RPE 8 set felt like an RPE 9 this week, hold or drop the weight instead of forcing the planned jump.
  • Rate every hard set: Log an RPE for your last 1-2 sets per exercise; over time this builds an accurate internal sense of effort.
  • Use it to plan a taper: Deliberately lowering target RPE (e.g. capping everything at RPE 6-7) for a week is a simple way to deload.

Worked example

Say your program calls for "3 sets of 5 @ RPE 8" on the squat. Here's how that might look across a training block as your true strength shifts week to week.

Many intermediate/advanced programs (like 5/3/1 or nSuns) blend both: percentages set the general range, RPE caps or adjusts the final top set.

By goal

  • Beginners: RPE ratings are unreliable until you've trained long enough to know what true failure feels like — lean on percentages or a simple linear progression first.
  • Intermediate/advanced lifters: Use RPE to autoregulate top sets and avoid grinding through a bad-recovery day at a fixed percentage.
  • Powerlifters peaking for a meet: RPE-based taper (deliberately capping RPE lower each week) is a standard way to arrive at a competition fresh.

Common misconceptions

  • "RPE 10 just means "that felt hard."" RPE 10 specifically means true muscular failure — you physically could not complete another rep with good form, not just that the set was uncomfortable.
  • "RPE is too subjective to be useful." New lifters rate it inconsistently at first, but accuracy improves quickly with practice, and even an imperfect RPE beats ignoring fatigue entirely.
  • "You should train at RPE 10 every set for the best results." Research on proximity to failure shows most of the growth and strength benefit comes from sets in the RPE 7-9 range; constant RPE 10 mainly adds fatigue and hurts recovery.

What does RPE 8 mean in the gym?

RPE 8 means you finished a set with about 2 reps left in reserve — the weight was hard but you could have done 2 more reps with good form if you had to. It's a common target for top working sets.

Is RPE the same as RIR?

They're closely related but not identical: RIR (reps in reserve) is a direct count of reps left, while RPE is a 1-10 effort rating that maps onto RIR. RPE 10 = 0 RIR, RPE 9 = 1 RIR, and so on.

How do I get better at estimating RPE?

Occasionally take a set to true failure so you know what RPE 10 actually feels like, then compare submaximal sets against that reference. Accuracy improves quickly with a few months of consistent, honest rating.

Should beginners use RPE?

Beginners can start learning RPE, but ratings are unreliable until you've experienced true failure a few times. Most beginner programs use simple linear percentage or weight-based progression instead, adding RPE once you have more training experience.

What RPE should I train at for strength?

Most strength-focused programs target RPE 7-9 on top sets, leaving 1-3 reps in reserve most sessions. Training at RPE 10 every set adds fatigue without extra benefit and increases injury risk over a training block.
