What is Autoregulation?
Autoregulation is a training approach that adjusts your planned weights, sets, or reps in real time based on how you're actually performing that day. Instead of a spreadsheet dictating '100 kg for 5 reps' regardless of how you feel, an autoregulated session lets a same-day input — most commonly RPE (rate of perceived exertion) or reps in reserve — decide the actual weight on the bar. Popularized in strength sports by coach Mike Tuchscherer's Reactive Training Systems, autoregulation exists because sleep, stress, nutrition, and accumulated fatigue all change how heavy a given weight feels from one session to the next, even when the number on the bar stays identical.
How it works
Autoregulation works by replacing, or capping, a fixed load prescription with a target based on effort or velocity, then letting the actual weight float to hit that target. A lifter given '5 reps @ RPE 8' adjusts the bar weight up or down until that specific set genuinely feels like 2 reps in reserve, rather than being locked into whatever number a program predicted weeks in advance. Because fatigue and readiness vary day to day, this lets training intensity track your real capacity instead of an estimate — on a good day you may lift more than planned, and on a rough day you back off before grinding out a needlessly hard, form-breaking set.

How to apply it
- Autoregulate the top set only: Keep most of your program fixed, but let your final, heaviest set for an exercise float based on RPE — this is the easiest entry point.
- Use it to catch bad days early: If your planned opener already feels like RPE 8-9 instead of the usual 6-7, that's a signal to trim volume or intensity for the rest of the session.
- Use it to catch good days too: Autoregulation isn't just for bad days — if a prescribed weight feels easy at the target reps, a small extra jump is often appropriate.
- Combine with a program, don't replace it: Most effective autoregulation happens inside a periodized plan — a target rep range and RPE band each week — not as a substitute for having a plan at all.
Worked example
Say a program uses velocity-based autoregulation on the bench press: stop each set once bar speed drops below 0.3 m/s, rather than following a fixed rep count.

- Competitive lifters approaching a meet: A deliberate, autoregulated taper, capping RPE lower each week, is a standard way to arrive at competition fresh without guessing at exact numbers.
Common misconceptions
- "Autoregulation means just 'winging it' in the gym." Effective autoregulation still follows a structured plan — a target rep range and effort band — only the exact load floats based on same-day performance, not the whole session.
- "You need expensive equipment (a velocity tracker) to autoregulate." RPE and reps-in-reserve are free, subjective tools that work well once practiced — velocity-based training is one option among several, not a requirement.
- "Autoregulation always means training less." On a good day, autoregulation can mean lifting more than a fixed plan called for — it adjusts in both directions based on real performance, not just as a permission slip to back off.
