What is periodization?
Periodization is a structured plan that deliberately changes your training variables — sets, reps, load, and exercise selection — over time, instead of repeating the same session every week. It splits training into phases, each with a specific job, so effort and fatigue rise and fall on purpose rather than by accident. The term comes from planning training in "periods" that build on each other.
Coaches organise those periods into three nested layers. A macrocycle is the big-picture plan — often a full year or a run-up to a competition. Inside it sit mesocycles, blocks of roughly three to six weeks aimed at one quality, like building volume or sharpening strength. Each mesocycle is made of weekly microcycles. You do not need the vocabulary to use the idea; you need to know which dials you are turning and when.

Why does periodization work?

Does periodization beat just adding weight?

Do beginners need periodization?
No. Most beginners do not need formal periodization. In your first 6-12 months, simple linear progression — adding a small amount of weight or a rep whenever you hit your target — drives fast, steady gains on its own. Save structured periodization for when that automatic progress slows. This is where a lot of new lifters waste energy building elaborate plans they do not yet need.
A beginner's body is so responsive that almost any progressive stimulus works. You can add 2.5 kg to your squat session after session for weeks, and the "plan" is nothing more than showing up and beating last time. That is technically the simplest form of progression there is, and it beats a complicated wave chart for someone in month two.

How do you apply periodization simply?

- Changing exercises constantly counts as periodization. — Random variety is not a plan. Periodization varies volume and intensity on purpose; swapping exercises every week without progressing them just resets your loads.
