How do you do the bradford press?

To do the Bradford Press: set a barbell in a rack at upper-chest height and grip it slightly wider than shoulder-width; unrack the bar and hold it across the front of your shoulders, elbows slightly in front of the bar; press the bar upward to about three-quarters of full lockout — stopping just short of straight arms; without pausing at the top, lower the bar behind your head to about ear level, keeping it close to your skull.

Breathing & tempo: Breathe in a steady rhythm rather than bracing for one big rep — since the bar never stops moving, hold a moderate brace and exhale in short bursts near the top of each half-press.

How should you warm up for the bradford press?

Warm up the shoulders with arm circles, band pull-aparts and a couple of light sets of a standard overhead press before attempting the Bradford press. Since this move demands more shoulder mobility than a normal press, take an extra minute to check you can move your arms overhead without arching your lower back.

What are the most common bradford press mistakes?

  • Using too much weight — Drop the load well below your normal overhead press — the Bradford press is about controlled tension, not maximal weight.
