How do you do the leg press?

To do the Leg Press: sit in the leg press machine with your back and head flat against the pad and your hips fully seated — don't let your lower back round off the pad; place your feet shoulder-width apart on the platform, centered, with your toes turned out slightly (about 15–30°); grip the side handles, then press the platform up slightly to unlock the safety catches and rotate them clear; lower the platform under control by bending your knees and hips until your knees reach roughly 90° — stop before your lower back rounds or your hips lift off the seat.

What are the key leg press form cues?

Foot position
Center your feet on the platform, shoulder-width apart, toes turned out slightly. This keeps the knees tracking over the toes through the whole rep.
Lower-back contact
Keep your lower back and glutes pressed into the pad and seat for the whole rep. If your hips lift off the seat at the bottom, you've gone deeper than your hips or hamstrings allow.
Knee lockout
Stop just short of fully locking your knees at the top. Locking out transfers load from the muscle onto the joint and adds unnecessary stress.
Push through the heel
Drive through your heels and mid-foot, not your toes. Pressing through the toes overloads the knees and can lift your heels off the platform.
Controlled descent
Lower the platform over about 2–3 seconds rather than letting the weight drop. A controlled eccentric keeps tension on the quads and protects the knees from a jarring bottom position.

Breathing & tempo: Take a breath and brace your core as you lower the platform, then exhale as you press through the sticking point near the bottom of the rep. A controlled 2-1-1 tempo (2s down, 1s pause at the bottom, 1s up) builds control and keeps tension on the quads rather than the joints.

How should you warm up for the leg press?

Start with two to three ramp-up sets using just the sled (or a light plate load) for 12–15 reps to groove the knee path and find a comfortable foot placement, then add weight in 2–3 jumps toward your working load — for example, roughly 50%, 70% and 85% of your first work set. A few bodyweight squats or leg swings beforehand help open up the hips and ankles.

What are the most common leg press mistakes?

  • Letting the hips lift off the seat at the bottom — Stop the descent a few inches earlier. Going deeper than your hip and hamstring flexibility allows rounds the lower back under load, which is the leading cause of leg-press back pain.
  • Locking the knees out hard at the top — Stop just short of full extension. Locking out shifts the load onto the knee joint instead of the quadriceps and increases joint stress on every rep.
  • Pressing through the toes with the heels lifting — Keep your heels planted and drive through the whole foot. Toes-only pressing overloads the knee and reduces quad tension.
  • Stacking on too much weight and using a partial range of motion — Pick a weight you can lower to a real 90° knee bend under control. A huge, half-rep leg press trains ego, not legs.
  • Placing feet too high or too low on the platform — Start centered and shoulder-width. Feet too low crowd the knees into a sharp angle; feet too high turn the exercise into more of a glute and hamstring press than a quad exercise.

RPE / RIR: Because the seat and back pad support your torso, the leg press is one of the safer machines to push close to failure without a spotter. Keep most working sets at RPE 7–9 (1–3 reps in reserve), and save true RPE 10 (failure) for your last set only, since a fully pinned sled can be awkward to rack quickly.

Most lifters get the best results leg pressing one to two times per week, typically as the second or third exercise on leg day after a free-weight squat or hinge pattern — the leg press is excellent for accumulating extra quad volume once your central nervous system is already warmed up from heavier free-weight work. Progress by adding reps within your target range first, then add the smallest available weight increment once you hit the top.

Your true range of motion is set by your hip and hamstring flexibility, not by a fixed knee angle, so it will vary slightly from person to person.

Is the leg press safe?

Most injuries come from overloading the machine with a partial range of motion, not from the exercise itself.

What counts as a good rep?

A leg press rep counts when you lower the platform under control to roughly a 90° knee bend — without your hips lifting off the seat or your lower back rounding off the pad — then press back up to full, non-locked extension. Partial reps with an overloaded sled don't count as a full rep and mostly stress the joints rather than the muscle.
