What is Lifting belt?

Lifting belt is a wide, rigid band worn around the waist during heavy resistance training that a lifter braces against to raise intra-abdominal pressure, increasing trunk stiffness and reducing spinal compression under maximal squats, deadlifts, and overhead presses.

What is Lifting belt?

Lifting belt is a thick band of leather or nylon worn snugly around the waist, used to give the core something rigid to brace against under a heavy squat, deadlift, or overhead press. The belt itself does not lift the weight — it works because the abdominal and lower-back muscles push outward against it, spiking intra-abdominal pressure far higher than an unbelted brace can achieve, which stiffens the trunk like a pressurized cylinder around the spine.

How it works

A weightlifting belt works by giving bracing muscles a firm surface to push against, which raises intra-abdominal pressure well beyond what's possible with just a deep breath and a beltless brace. Research measuring this directly found IAP increases of roughly 25-40% with a belt on, with trunk stiffness rising substantially as IAP climbs — the combination reduces compressive and shear load on the lumbar spine at a given weight. That mechanical support is why belted lifters typically move 5-15% more weight on the squat and deadlift than beltless, and why the NSCA recommends belt use specifically for near-maximal loads, roughly above 85% of 1RM, rather than for every warm-up set.

Most coaches recommend training some volume beltless to build core strength, then belting up specifically for top sets and competition.

Common misconceptions

  • "A belt does the bracing for you." A belt only works if you actively push your abs and lower back out against it — wearing one loosely without a hard brace adds little to no benefit.
  • "Wearing a belt proves you'll get injured less." Research shows belts reliably raise intra-abdominal pressure and can reduce spinal compression, but studies have not consistently proven fewer injuries — the strongest evidence is for performance and bracing support, not guaranteed injury prevention.
