What is Linear periodization?
Linear periodization is a long-range training plan divided into blocks, or mesocycles, that each have a specific goal — commonly hypertrophy, then strength, then power or peaking — with volume and intensity moving in one direction across the whole cycle rather than varying week to week. Each phase typically lasts 4-6 weeks before shifting into the next. How it works
A linear plan starts with higher volume and lower intensity to build a base of work capacity and muscle, then deliberately reduces volume while intensity (percentage of 1RM) rises through later phases, so the body can recover enough to express strength and power near the end of the block. This model works especially well when there's a single target date — a competition or a fitness test — to peak for, since each phase is designed to build toward the next rather than to sustain itself indefinitely. Because each mesocycle only asks the body to adapt to one dominant stressor at a time (first higher volume, later higher intensity), recovery demands are relatively predictable and easy to plan around compared with models that change the stimulus every session. The tradeoff is that qualities trained early in the cycle, like the higher-rep hypertrophy work in phase one, can partially detrain by the time the peaking phase arrives many weeks later, which is one reason more advanced lifters often move toward periodization models that revisit multiple qualities more frequently.
