What is Partial Reps?
Partial reps are repetitions performed through only part of an exercise's full range of motion, rather than moving the joint from full stretch to full contraction. A lifter might squat only the bottom third, curl only the top half, or press only the last few inches of lockout. Because you skip the hardest or easiest section of the strength curve, partials let you move more weight, target a specific joint angle, or keep a set going once full-range reps are no longer possible.
How it works
Every exercise has a strength curve — some joint angles are mechanically stronger than others. Partial reps deliberately train (or avoid) a section of that curve: lengthened partials load the muscle at its longest, most stretched position, where research increasingly shows a strong hypertrophy signal; shortened partials train the fully contracted position, often used to finish a set once you can no longer complete a full rep. Because tension is confined to one joint angle, the strength built is largely specific to that range and does not fully transfer to the full lift.
Types
Lengthened partials (bottom-half)
Trains the muscle at its longest position — e.g. the bottom half of a squat or Romanian deadlift. Emerging research shows this range drives comparable or greater hypertrophy per set than full ROM for some muscles.
Shortened partials (top-half)
Trains the fully contracted position — e.g. the top half of a curl or leg extension. Common as a past-failure extension technique.
Mid-range partials
Rarely programmed deliberately; usually the byproduct of limited equipment range or joint restrictions rather than a chosen technique.
Worked example
Say you're back squatting 100 kg for 3 sets of 8 full-range reps. On your last working set you grind out 6 clean reps and can't complete a 7th through the full range. Here's how a past-failure partial extension looks.

Use full ROM as your base and add partials as a targeted tool, not a replacement.
Common misconceptions
- "Partial reps always build more muscle than full-range reps." A 2020 systematic review (Schoenfeld & Grgic) found full ROM training produced similar or slightly greater hypertrophy than partial ROM across the studies reviewed — partials are a supplement, not a superior default.
- "Because you can lift more weight with partials, they build more raw strength." Strength gained through a limited range is largely angle-specific and does not fully carry over to the full lift, so heavier partial-rep numbers don't always mean a bigger full-range max.
- "Partial reps are only an advanced bodybuilding trick." Lengthened partials at a joint's longest position show a real hypertrophy signal in recent research and can be used by any lifter targeting a specific muscle or sticking point, not just at the end of a set.
