What is Rep Range?

A rep range is the target number of repetitions performed per set within a training program, typically expressed as a low-to-high span (such as 6-12 reps) that is chosen to match a specific goal like maximal strength, muscle hypertrophy, or muscular endurance.

What is Rep Range?

A rep range is simply the number of repetitions you aim to hit in a set, given as a span rather than one fixed number — for example, 'squat 3 sets of 8-10.' Programs assign a rep range instead of a single number because it lets you push to the top of the range as you get stronger before adding weight, rather than stalling on an exact rep count. Traditional programming ties each rep range to a training goal, using heavier loads for fewer reps to build strength and lighter loads for more reps to build endurance.

How it works

A rep range works because it is inversely tied to load: the fewer reps in a target range, the heavier the weight needs to be to reach fatigue by the last rep, and the more reps in the range, the lighter the load. Historically this 'repetition continuum' assumed each range produced a distinct adaptation — low reps for strength, moderate reps for size, high reps for endurance. More recent research shows hypertrophy can be built across a much wider span of rep ranges (roughly 5-30) as long as sets are taken close enough to failure and total volume is similar; rep range still matters most for how heavy the weight feels and how directly it trains true maximal-strength technique.

Types

Strength (1-5 reps)

Heaviest loads (~85%+ of 1RM); best for building maximal force and technique under near-max weight.

Hypertrophy (6-12 reps)

Moderate loads (~65-85% of 1RM); the traditional 'muscle-building' range, though not uniquely superior to other ranges taken close to failure.

Muscular endurance (15-25+ reps)

Lighter loads (~50-65% of 1RM); builds fatigue resistance and can still build muscle when sets approach failure.

Worked example

Say your program calls for bench press in the 6-10 rep range at a given weight. Here's how you would progress within that range before adding load.

This 'double progression' — add reps within the range, then add weight and reset to the bottom of the range — is the simplest way to apply a rep range in practice.

The two are linked but not identical — picking a rep range implicitly sets an intensity zone, and picking an intensity implicitly limits how many reps you can perform.

Common misconceptions

  • "The 8-12 rep range is the only range that builds muscle." Research shows sets taken close to failure across a wide 5-30 rep span produce similar hypertrophy when volume is matched; 8-12 is simply a practical, joint-friendly default.
  • "Low reps only build strength and don't build any muscle." Heavy, low-rep sets still create meaningful hypertrophy — they just accumulate less total volume per session than moderate-rep sets, so many strength athletes add extra volume work at higher reps.
  • "You should stay in exactly one rep range forever." Most well-designed programs rotate or blend rep ranges across a training block (periodization) to balance strength, size and joint tolerance.
