No black box. Pace is simple division; race prediction uses a named endurance model — here they are in full.

Pace pace = time ÷ distance

The core relationship. Rearranged, time = pace × distance and distance = time ÷ pace. 50 min ÷ 10 km → 5:00/km.

Worked example — a goal 4:00:00 marathon over 42.195 km needs 14,400 s ÷ 42.195 km = 341 s/km ≈ 5:41/km (9:09/mile). Riegel predictions assume even effort and specific endurance; they read fast if you have not trained the longer distance, so treat them as targets, not guarantees.

How do you calculate running pace?

Running pace is total time divided by distance. Run 10 km in 50 minutes and your pace is 50 ÷ 10 = 5 minutes per kilometre. This calculator solves any of the three values — pace, time, or distance — from the other two, and converts between minutes per kilometre and minutes per mile automatically.

What is a good running pace per kilometre?

A good pace depends on fitness and goal. Recreational runners often cruise easy miles at 6:00 to 7:00 per kilometre, while a sub-4-hour marathon needs roughly 5:41 per kilometre held for the full distance. Rather than chase one number, compare your easy, tempo, and race paces and let them rise together over a training block.

How do I predict my race time from a recent race?

This calculator uses Pete Riegel's formula: predicted time equals your known time multiplied by (new distance ÷ old distance) raised to the power 1.06. A 25-minute 5K predicts a 10K near 51:57. The exponent 1.06 accounts for the fact that longer races are run at a slightly slower pace, so predictions are most reliable for well-trained runners across similar distances.

What pace do I need for a sub-4-hour marathon?

A 4-hour marathon requires an average pace of about 5:41 per kilometre, or 9:09 per mile, held across all 42.2 km. Enter a 4:00:00 goal time and the marathon distance and this calculator returns that exact pace, plus the per-kilometre splits so you can see the required consistency lap by lap.

How do I convert between min/km and min/mile pace?

One mile equals 1.609 kilometres, so a per-mile pace is faster in minutes than the same effort per kilometre. To convert min/km to min/mile, multiply by 1.609; to go the other way, divide by 1.609. This calculator does both instantly when you switch the pace unit, so your splits and race predictions update in the unit you race in.
