What is the difference between powerlifting and bodybuilding?
Powerlifting is a strength sport: you get three attempts each at the squat, bench press and deadlift, and your best successful lift in each counts toward a total, measured in kilograms against others in your weight class. Bodybuilding is a physique sport: you are judged on muscle size, symmetry, proportion and conditioning — how you look on stage.
That difference in scoring drives everything else. A powerlifter only has to move the bar; nobody scores how their arms look or whether their left quad matches the right. The whole training system exists to add kilos to one heavy single in three lifts. A bodybuilder never gets tested on strength at all — a judge cannot see your one-rep max. They score the finished product: full, balanced muscle over a lean frame, presented through posing.
So the honest one-liner is this. Powerlifting optimises for output — what you can lift. Bodybuilding optimises for appearance — what you look like. Everything below flows from those two scoreboards.
How does training differ between powerlifting and bodybuilding?
Powerlifting uses heavy loads (roughly 80–100%+ of 1RM), low reps (1–5), long rest (3–5 minutes) and a narrow menu built around the three lifts. Bodybuilding uses moderate loads (60–80% 1RM), higher reps (6–15), short rest (1–2 minutes), high weekly volume and a wide range of exercises to hit every muscle from several angles.

The load and rep-range split is the clearest fork. Heavy singles and doubles train the nervous system to produce maximal force — the specific skill a powerlifter is scored on. Sets of 8–12 near failure, with plenty of them, drive the weekly volume that grows muscle. Rest follows suit: a powerlifter waits 3–5 minutes so every heavy attempt is fresh, while a bodybuilder cuts rest to 1–2 minutes to keep the muscle under tension and accumulate fatigue.
Exercise selection diverges just as hard. A powerlifter's program is mostly the competition squat, bench and deadlift plus close variations — pause bench, deficit deadlifts, pin squats — chosen to fix weak points in those three lifts. A bodybuilder rotates through machines, cables, dumbbells and isolation moves specifically to bias lagging muscles and hit each from new angles, because a judge will notice a flat side delt or a small calf. Where do powerlifting and bodybuilding overlap?
They overlap far more than the tribalism suggests: both are resistance training, both build muscle, and both build strength. Strength and size are correlated — a bigger muscle has more force potential — so the training just prioritises different ends of one continuum rather than doing opposite things.
The evidence is clean here. Schoenfeld and colleagues' 2017 meta-analysis compared low-load (bodybuilding-style, higher-rep) with high-load (powerlifting-style) training and found similar muscle growth from both when sets were taken close to failure — but the high-load groups gained more maximal strength.[2] That is specificity in one sentence: heavy lifting is better at making you strong; a wide range of loads all build muscle. The 2021 re-examination of the repetition continuum reached the same conclusion across loads from roughly 30% to 85%+ of 1RM.[1]
Volume is the shared currency. Schoenfeld, Ogborn and Krieger's dose-response review found each extra weekly set was associated with about a 0.37% increase in muscle gained, with higher-volume groups growing roughly 3.9% more.[3] Bodybuilders lean into that dose harder, but powerlifters still accumulate it through their heavy work and accessories. Training each muscle twice a week beat once-weekly on a volume-matched basis in the frequency meta-analysis[4] — advice both camps follow. The upshot: a powerlifter builds real muscle, and a bodybuilder builds real strength. They are cousins, not opposites.

What is powerbuilding, the hybrid?
Powerbuilding is the hybrid style that blends both: you train the squat, bench and deadlift heavy for strength — usually first in the session, in the 3–6 rep range — then add higher-rep bodybuilding accessories for size and shape. It aims to be strong and look good rather than to win at either sport.
The structure is simple. Open with a main lift for a few hard, low-rep sets with long rest, the way a powerlifter would. Then switch gears: hit accessory and isolation work for 8–15 reps with shorter rest, the way a bodybuilder would, chasing progressive overload on both. You give up a little of each — you will not squat quite as much as a pure powerlifter, or bring quite the stage-ready symmetry of a dedicated bodybuilder — but for the vast majority of gym-goers who never compete, that trade is a bargain. Which should you choose?
Choose by your actual goal. If you want to lift the most weight possible or compete in strength, train as a powerlifter. If you want to look muscular, lean and symmetrical or step on a physique stage, train as a bodybuilder. If you just want to be strong and look good, powerbuilding covers both.

Two honest caveats. First, enjoyment beats theory — the best style is the one you will run for years, because consistency dwarfs program details for building both muscle and strength. Second, beginners barely need to choose: in your first year almost any hard, progressive plan builds muscle and strength at once, so it is fine to sample both before committing. Can you train for both at the same time?
Yes, with compromises. You can build strength and size in the same block — that is what powerbuilding does — but you cannot maximise both simultaneously at an elite level. Specificity and recovery set the limit: peaking a heavy total and dieting into stage condition pull your training and your calories in opposite directions.
For a recreational lifter, the compromise is tiny. Run heavy mains plus hypertrophy accessories and you will get 90% of the strength and 90% of the size you would from specialising — plenty for anyone not chasing a medal. The trade-off only bites near the top. A powerlifter peaking for a meet strips out accessory volume and eats to stay strong; a bodybuilder in contest prep runs a long calorie deficit that quietly costs strength, since a bigger deficit blunts recovery and force output even when protein stays high.[5] You can alternate: spend a strength block getting stronger, then a hypertrophy block adding muscle, rather than forcing both to peak at once.
The one thing to keep constant either way is protein. Both goals sit on 1.6–2.2 g of protein per kg of bodyweight, and the meta-analysis behind that number found little added benefit above roughly 1.6 g/kg for muscle and strength.[5][6] Fuel is shared even when the training is not.
How do the physiques and strength differ?
A powerlifter and a bodybuilder of the same height can look and perform very differently. Powerlifters carry more overall mass and often more body fat, with thick torsos, hips and legs, and the highest tested 1RMs. Bodybuilders carry lower body fat with balanced, detailed development everywhere — but usually a lower true max.

The gap is mostly about what each sport rewards, not what training can produce. Powerlifters do not train calves, side delts or abs for show, and heavier lifters often carry extra body fat on purpose because more bodyweight tends to mean a bigger total in the open class. Bodybuilders chase every lagging muscle and then diet the fat off so it all shows. Neither builds a "better" body — they build the body their scoreboard pays for.
Common myths about powerlifters and bodybuilders
Most of the folklore here is wrong. Powerlifters are muscular, bodybuilders are strong, and neither low reps nor high reps hold a monopoly on results. The myths survive because each sport hides one quality while showing off the other.
- Powerlifters are not muscular. — Force comes from muscle. A 100 kg raw powerlifter carries serious mass — they simply do not diet down or train for stage symmetry, so the muscle is often hidden under a higher body fat.
- Bodybuilders are not strong. — Top bodybuilders rep loads most gym-goers can barely move for one. They rarely test a true 1RM and live in the 6–12 range, so their max looks lower on paper than their muscle would allow.
- Powerlifting makes you fat. — The higher body fat some open-class lifters carry is a strategic choice — more bodyweight usually means a bigger total. Train the lifts in a lean, lighter class and you stay lean.
- High reps tone, low reps bulk. — Both rep ranges build muscle when sets are taken near failure.[2] "Toning" is just muscle plus lower body fat; you cannot rep a muscle into a different shape.
Strip the marketing away and it is one truth underneath: resistance training builds muscle and strength together, and the sport you pick decides which one you polish and which one you leave in the rough. Knowing that frees you to borrow from both.

Is powerlifting or bodybuilding better for building muscle?
Bodybuilding builds more muscle for most people, because higher volume and rep ranges of 6–15 accumulate more work per muscle than heavy singles do. Powerlifting still builds muscle, especially in beginners, but its low-rep, low-volume style is optimised for maximal strength, not size.
Can you do powerlifting and bodybuilding at the same time?

Should a beginner start with powerlifting or bodybuilding?
