What is Bar speed?
Bar speed is simply how fast the barbell travels during the lifting (concentric) portion of a rep, measured in meters per second. It's an objective number rather than a feeling — a linear position transducer, accelerometer, or even a phone camera tracking app can time how quickly the bar moves and report a speed for every single rep.
How it works
Bar speed at a given percentage of one-rep max is fairly predictable for an individual lifter, and it reliably slows down as fatigue builds within a set or across a session — the same weight that moved at 0.6 m/s on a fresh set might only hit 0.4 m/s on a fatigued one. That predictable relationship between speed, load and fatigue is what lets coaches use bar speed as an objective stand-in for effort: a live estimate of how close a set is to failure, similar in purpose to RPE but based on a measured number instead of a subjective rating.

- "Faster is always better." Speed is only meaningful relative to the load being lifted — a 0.4 m/s rep at 95% of 1RM is a strong, fast rep for that intensity, even though it looks slow next to a warm-up set.
- "You need expensive lab equipment to track bar speed." Phone-camera tracking apps and low-cost accelerometer devices give a usable estimate for most training purposes, without the cost of a full lab-grade transducer.
