What is Dynamic effort?

Dynamic effort is a strength-training method that moves a submaximal barbell load, typically 50-60% of one-rep max, as explosively as possible for low reps across several sets, to build the rate of force development that speed and power depend on.

What is Dynamic effort?

Dynamic effort is the speed-focused counterpart to max-effort training: rather than working up to the heaviest possible load, a lifter moves a lighter, fixed percentage of their max as fast as their body can produce force. It targets a part of the force-velocity curve that pure max-effort work can't reach — max effort trains the ability to produce very high force slowly, while dynamic effort trains the ability to produce force quickly, which is what carries over into a fast bar off the chest or out of the hole on a heavy attempt.

How it works

Force output and movement velocity trade off against each other — the heavier the load, the slower the bar moves, and vice versa. Dynamic effort deliberately trains the faster end of that curve by keeping the load light enough (50-60% of 1RM) that a lifter can accelerate it maximally for the whole rep, building rate of force development rather than absolute strength. Accommodating resistance (bands or chains) is often added so the bar gets progressively heavier as it nears lockout, forcing continued acceleration through a range where a plain barbell would otherwise decelerate — a key reason Westside pairs dynamic effort with bands and chains rather than straight weight alone.

How to apply it

  • Pick a competition-style variant: Use the actual squat, bench or deadlift pattern (not a max-effort variation) so the speed work transfers directly to the competition lift.
  • Load to 50-60% of 1RM: Load conservatively enough that every rep can be moved at near-maximal intended speed, not just moderately fast.
  • Add bands or chains (optional): Accommodating resistance keeps the bar accelerating through lockout instead of decelerating, which happens naturally with straight weight.
  • Move every rep with maximal intent: The goal is bar speed, not fatigue — stop the set the instant intended speed can't be maintained.
  • Rest 45-60 seconds: Short rests keep the session brisk without so much fatigue that later sets slow down.

Common misconceptions

  • "Dynamic effort is just speed squats with no real purpose." It specifically trains rate of force development — the ability to produce force quickly — which max-effort work at slow, heavy loads doesn't train on its own.
  • "You must use bands or chains to do dynamic effort work." Straight-weight dynamic effort still builds bar speed; accommodating resistance is a common enhancement, not a requirement.
  • "Heavier is always better for a dynamic-effort set." Going much above ~65-70% of 1RM turns the set into a grind rather than a speed set, defeating the purpose of the method.
