What is Max effort?
Max effort is training at the true top of a lifter's current strength — working a set of ascending singles up to whatever weight can be lifted for 1-3 clean reps that day. Unlike a straightforward 1RM test on the competition lift, max-effort work is almost always performed on a rotating variation (a cambered-bar good morning, safety-squat-bar box squat, or floor press, for example) rather than the exact squat, bench or deadlift used in competition, specifically so the competition lifts stay fresh for the meet.
How it works

How to apply it
- Pick a rotating variation: Choose an exercise close to the competition lift but different enough to spare it — e.g. a box squat instead of a free squat.
- Warm up with ascending singles: Climb in relatively large jumps toward an estimated top single, leaving enough in reserve to still push past it.
- Work to a true 1-3RM: Keep adding weight in smaller jumps until a clean single (or double/triple) at the technical limit is reached for that day.
- Stop at technical failure: End the max-effort set once bar speed or form breaks down — grinding out one hard rep is expected, missing reps is not the goal.
- Log it and rotate: Record the top weight, then swap to a different variation next week or cycle rather than re-testing the same lift immediately.
