What is Obliques?

The obliques are two paired abdominal muscles on each side of the trunk - the external oblique on the surface and the internal oblique beneath it. Running in crossing diagonal directions, they rotate and side-bend the torso, compress the abdomen, and resist rotation to help stabilize the spine.

What is Obliques?

The obliques are the muscles that wrap the sides of your abdomen and form the side walls of the core cylinder. There are two on each side. The external oblique is the outermost of the flat abdominal muscles; its fibers run downward and inward, in the same direction your hands point when tucked into front pockets. Beneath it sits the internal oblique, whose fibers run roughly at right angles to the external oblique, upward and inward. This crisscross arrangement is the key to how they function. Because the fibers cross, the external oblique on one side works with the internal oblique on the opposite side to rotate the trunk. Both muscles attach into the broad connective sheets of the abdominal wall - their aponeuroses help form the rectus sheath that encases the six-pack muscle - and the external oblique blends into the thoracolumbar fascia at the back, linking the abdominal wall to the lumbar spine. People often think of the obliques only as the muscles that carve the sides of a lean midsection, but functionally they are heavy contributors to how the trunk twists, bends, braces, and even breathes. Because they wrap the trunk at an angle rather than running straight up and down, the obliques are uniquely suited to controlling the diagonal and rotational forces that a purely vertical muscle like the rectus abdominis cannot manage on its own. They compress the abdomen during forced exhalation, coughing, and bracing, and they generate and control the rotation that powers throwing, swinging, punching, and change of direction. Just as importantly, they resist rotation and side-bend, keeping the spine stable while the arms and legs move asymmetrically - such as during a single-arm carry or a heavy suitcase deadlift.

How it works

The two oblique layers act as diagonal force generators around the trunk. When the external oblique on the right contracts together with the internal oblique on the left, the torso rotates to the left; the mirror pairing rotates it to the right. Acting on one side alone with the other relaxed, the obliques side-bend the trunk toward the working side (lateral flexion). Working with the rectus abdominis, both obliques on both sides together assist in flexing the trunk and, critically, in pulling the ribcage down and tensioning the abdominal wall. When they co-contract with the deep transverse abdominis, they raise intra-abdominal pressure and pull the thoracolumbar fascia taut, adding lateral and rotational stiffness to the lumbar spine. This is why the obliques are as much anti-movement muscles as movement muscles. In an athletic context their fastest, most powerful role is rotation - a baseball swing, a golf drive, a boxing hook, or a med-ball throw all channel force from the hips through the obliques to the upper body. But in a lifting context their stabilizing role dominates. During a heavy squat or deadlift they resist the tendency of the trunk to buckle or twist; during a single-arm overhead press or a suitcase carry they fire hard on one side to stop the torso from tipping toward the load. Training the obliques effectively means covering all of these functions. Loaded rotation and controlled anti-rotation drills such as Pallof presses train the crossing fibers directly. Side planks and single-arm loaded carries hammer their anti-lateral-flexion role. Weighted side bends and Russian twists load side-bending and rotation for those chasing size and definition. Because the obliques are part of the same abdominal wall as the rectus abdominis, they also respond to the general demands of heavy bracing during compound lifts. For visible development, the same rule as the rest of the abs applies: the muscle must be trained and fed to grow, but it will only show at a low enough body-fat level. It is also worth remembering that oblique strength is highly directional: an athlete can be strong rotating one way and noticeably weaker the other, or solid at generating rotation but poor at resisting it. Training both sides evenly and covering both the create-rotation and resist-rotation functions is what turns the obliques from a cosmetic afterthought into genuine athletic armor for the spine.

How to apply it

  • Loaded rotation: Cable woodchops and med-ball rotational throws train the obliques through their powerful twisting action. Drive the rotation from the hips and torso, not the arms, and control the return. Use moderate loads for 8-15 controlled reps per side.
  • Anti-rotation: Pallof presses and half-kneeling cable holds force the obliques to resist twist while the arms move. Keep the hips and shoulders square and hold each rep for a beat. This trains the stabilizing role that carries over to every big lift.
  • Anti-lateral-flexion carries: Suitcase carries and single-arm overhead carries load one side of the trunk, forcing the obliques and quadratus lumborum to keep you upright. Go heavy, stay tall, and walk 20-40 meters per side without leaning away from the weight.
  • Side planks: A side plank trains the obliques isometrically against gravity. Stack the hips and shoulders, keep a straight line from ankle to head, and hold 25-45 seconds per side. Progress by adding a top-leg raise or a reach-through rotation.
  • Weighted side bends: Holding a dumbbell in one hand, bend directly sideways and return, letting the opposite obliques stretch and contract. Useful for hypertrophy and definition in the 10-15 rep range, but keep the movement in the frontal plane with no forward lean.
  • Let carries and big lifts help: Heavy squats, deadlifts, and overhead work brace the obliques hard as part of the whole trunk. Direct oblique drills are the accessory that fills the gaps, not a replacement for training the core under real load.

Types

External oblique

The superficial layer; fibers run down and in (hands-in-pockets direction). Rotates the trunk to the opposite side, side-bends to the same side, and compresses the abdomen.

Internal oblique

The layer just beneath the external oblique; fibers run roughly perpendicular to it. Rotates the trunk to the same side, side-bends to the same side, and tensions the thoracolumbar fascia.

Worked example

A balanced oblique session that covers all three functions - rotation, anti-rotation, and anti-lateral-flexion - rather than only twisting drills. Run it twice a week after your main lifts, and progress by adding load or distance while keeping every rep controlled and honest.

Rotational power and rotational stability are two sides of the same coin. Training both keeps the obliques strong for sport and protective for heavy asymmetrical lifts and carries.

The two layers crossing at near-right angles is exactly what lets opposite-side pairs generate and control rotation, which no single flat muscle could do alone.

By goal

  • Rotational-sport athletes: Emphasize loaded rotation and rotational power - med-ball throws, cable chops - alongside heavy anti-rotation work. The obliques must both create fast rotation and stiffen to transfer force from the hips to the upper body without energy leaks.
  • Physique / hypertrophy lifters: Add progressive load to weighted side bends, cable woodchops, and hanging oblique raises in the 10-15 rep range. Building the obliques thickens the waist slightly, so many physique athletes train them for function while keeping visible taper in mind.
  • Rehab / injury prevention: Focus on controlled anti-rotation and anti-lateral-flexion - Pallof presses, side planks, suitcase carries - to improve lateral spinal stability. These low-risk drills train the obliques to protect the lumbar spine during everyday asymmetrical loading.

Common misconceptions

  • "Twisting exercises will shrink your waist." Rotation trains the obliques but does not spot-reduce fat over them. In fact, adding load to oblique work can thicken the waist slightly. A smaller-looking waist comes from lower body fat plus overall structure, not from twisting drills alone.
  • "The obliques only twist the torso." Rotation is one role. The obliques also side-bend the trunk, compress the abdomen for forced breathing and bracing, and, most usefully for lifters, resist rotation and side-bend to keep the spine stable during heavy and asymmetrical loads.
  • "Russian twists are the best oblique exercise." Russian twists can train rotation, but they are easy to do with momentum and can stress the lumbar spine when loaded carelessly. Pallof presses, carries, and controlled cable chops usually build more useful, transferable oblique strength.
  • "Side bends build love handles." Love handles are subcutaneous fat, not muscle you can spot-train away or accidentally build with side bends. Side bends develop the obliques underneath; whether the area looks lean depends on total body-fat level, driven by diet.

What do the oblique muscles do?

The obliques rotate the trunk, bend it sideways, and compress the abdomen. Just as important, they resist rotation and side-bend, stabilizing the spine while the arms and legs move. They also help forced exhalation and contribute to bracing during heavy lifts.

What is the difference between internal and external obliques?

Do oblique exercises make your waist smaller?

Can strong obliques help prevent back pain?

Well-conditioned obliques improve lateral and rotational stability of the spine, which is part of a resilient trunk. Anti-rotation and anti-lateral-flexion drills are commonly used in back rehab, though back health depends on many factors beyond oblique strength alone.

Why do the oblique fibers run in different directions?

The crossing arrangement lets opposite-side pairs work together to generate and control rotation, something a single flat muscle could not do. It also lets the obliques wrap and compress the abdomen efficiently, tensioning the abdominal wall and the thoracolumbar fascia.
