What is Transverse Abdominis?
The transverse abdominis, often abbreviated TVA, is the deepest layer of your abdominal wall, sitting beneath the rectus abdominis and the internal and external obliques. Its fibres run horizontally, straight across the belly, which is unusual - the other abdominal muscles run vertically or diagonally. That horizontal orientation is the whole point: instead of bending or twisting the spine, the transverse abdominis wraps around the trunk like a wide belt or corset and squeezes inward. When it contracts, it draws the abdominal wall in, compresses the contents of the abdomen, and increases the pressure inside the abdominal cavity. That rise in intra-abdominal pressure stiffens the whole trunk from the inside, giving the spine a stable base to work from. This is why the transverse abdominis is considered a foundational "core" muscle rather than a mover - you do not see it, and it does not create a visible six-pack (that is the rectus abdominis), but it is working quietly behind the scenes almost constantly. How it works

Its fibres then run horizontally forward and insert into the linea alba - the fibrous midline of the abdomen - via a broad aponeurosis, with the lower fibres joining the internal oblique to form the conjoint tendon attaching near the pubis. How to apply it
- Learn to brace 360 degrees: Before loading, practise bracing: take a breath into your belly and low back, then tense the whole abdominal wall as if about to take a punch - expanding pressure all the way around, not just sucking in. This is the core skill the transverse abdominis supports under heavy lifts.
- Anti-extension work: Planks, ab wheel rollouts, and dead bugs train the TVA and the rest of the deep core to resist the spine arching. Hold a strong brace and neutral spine; quality is measured by how still your trunk stays, not by how many reps you rush through.

- Loaded carries: Farmer's carries, suitcase carries, and overhead carries force the deep core to hold the trunk rigid against load and gait. Walk tall with a firm brace for 30-50 metres; suitcase (single-side) carries especially challenge anti-lateral-flexion stability.

Hollowing was once taught as the way to activate the transverse abdominis, but research on trunk stiffness generally favours a full brace for protecting the spine under heavy load. Hollowing still has a place for teaching awareness and in early rehabilitation.

- General fitness and aesthetics: The transverse abdominis flattens and cinches the waist when it is toned, but it will not give you a six-pack - that is the rectus abdominis plus low body fat. Common misconceptions
- "Crunches train the transverse abdominis." Crunches mainly train the rectus abdominis, which flexes the spine.
