What do lifting straps actually do?
Lifting straps attach your hands to the bar so your grip stops being the limiting factor on pulling movements. That lets you do more reps, accumulate more total volume and hold heavier loads on back, trap and hamstring work — training the target muscle to real failure instead of ending the set when your forearms and fingers quit.
On heavy pulls, your grip often fails before the big muscles you are trying to train. Jukic and colleagues tested this directly on the conventional deadlift: straps improved grip security, let lifters complete more reps, and lowered perceived exertion at a given load compared with pulling raw. [1] A companion study showed straps shift the entire load-velocity profile — the bar simply moves faster at any given weight when your grip is not the bottleneck. [2] That extra speed and those extra reps are pure training stimulus for the back and hips.
It is not only the deadlift. On the lat pulldown, Valério and colleagues found straps let lifters grind out more repetitions before grip gave out, putting more work on the lats. The mechanism matters: straps do nothing for the muscle itself. They just move the weak link. If your grip was ending your rows two reps early, straps hand you those two reps — and over a training block, those reps are where the weekly volume and progressive overload come from.

When should you use lifting straps?
Use straps on heavy or high-rep back and trap work where grip fails before the target muscle: heavy rows, lat pulldowns, shrugs and deadlift back-off sets. If your forearms are burning out while your back still has more in it, that is the exact signal to strap up.
The test is simple. Ask yourself which muscle is stopping the set. On a hard set of bent-over barbell rows or heavy shrugs, it is often the grip — your traps and lats can handle far more load than your fingers can hold for reps. That mismatch is the case for straps. On a moderate set where your back gives out first, straps add nothing.

Trahey and colleagues found the same benefit holds in female lifters, whose deadlift grip strength is often the limiter relative to their hip and back strength — straps improved their deadlift performance too. When should you train your grip raw instead?
Train grip raw on warm-ups, moderate working sets where grip is not the limiter, and any dedicated grip work — holds, carries, and heavy raw pulls. This keeps your grip developing so it does not quietly become the weak link that caps your back training.
Grip is trainable, and warm-up and ramp-up sets are free reps for it — the load is nowhere near your grip's limit, so there is no reason to strap. Beyond that, build at least a little deliberate grip work into the week: timed deadlift holds, farmer's carries, or simply leaving your top raw pulls unstrapped. If you compete or test raw, this is non-negotiable, because on the platform there is no strap — the grip you trained is the grip you get.
There is a real cost to skipping this. Straps reduce forearm and grip demand by design, so a lifter who straps everything ends up with a big back and a grip that lags well behind it. Do lifting straps weaken your grip?
Straps only weaken your grip if you use them on everything and never train grip raw. Used selectively — on the heavy or high-rep back work where grip is the limiter, while keeping warm-ups, moderate sets and dedicated grip work strap-free — they do not hold your grip back at all.
The concern is really about training dose, not the straps themselves. Your grip adapts to the demand you place on it. Remove that demand from every set and, unsurprisingly, it stops improving. Keep meaningful raw exposure in the week and your grip keeps pace while straps let your back keep climbing. The 2026 review makes the same point: straps are a tool with a clear trade-off, and the trade-off only bites when you ignore grip entirely. [6]
Think of it like a spotter. A spotter on every set of your life would blunt your progress; a spotter on the sets that need one lets you train harder safely. Straps work the same way — targeted, not constant.
What are the different types of lifting straps?
The four common types are lasso, closed-loop, figure-8 and hook straps. They trade off security against ease of use: closed loops are fastest but least secure, figure-8s are the most locked-in for maximal pulls, hook straps remove grip entirely, and lasso straps are the versatile middle ground most lifters should start with.

For almost everyone, a single pair of cotton or nylon lasso straps covers every job — they are secure enough for heavy compound pulls yet quick to loosen between sets. Buy figure-8s only if maximal strapped deadlifts are a regular part of your training, and treat hook straps as a niche tool: they remove grip completely, which is occasionally handy but means zero grip stimulus. How do you wrap a lasso strap?
To wrap a lasso strap, thread the tail through the loop, seat it across the base of your palm, lay your wrist over the bar, then wrap the tail under and over the bar two to three times and roll the bar into your fingers to cinch it tight. Grip over the strap and take up tension before you pull.
- 1Thread the tail through the loop to make an adjustable noose. Slip your hand in so the strap sits across the base of your palm, with the tail hanging down past the little-finger side.
- 2Set that wrist on top of the bar, tail pointing down and away from you.
- 3Wrap the tail around the bar — under, then back over the top — two to three passes, feeding it toward your body so it stays flat.
- 4Roll the bar back into your fingers to pull the wrap tight. The more you roll, the harder it cinches.
- 5Grip over the strap and take up tension before you pull. To release, roll the bar forward and unwind the tail.
The direction is the part people get wrong. Wrap so that rolling the bar back into your fingers tightens the strap. Wrap it the other way and the tail unwinds under load — which is exactly when you least want it to. Do a light set first to check the wrap holds before you load anything heavy.
Straps vs a hook grip vs chalk: which should you use?
Chalk improves friction while your grip still does the work, a hook grip gives a very secure equipment-free hold that still trains grip, and straps remove grip as the limiter entirely. Reach for chalk first, learn the hook grip for raw and competition pulls, and use straps for high-volume back work you want to push past grip failure.

These are not mutually exclusive — most experienced lifters use all three. Chalk lives in the gym bag for every session. The hook grip is worth learning if you pull raw or do any Olympic lifting, because it is secure and legal on the platform. Straps come out for the specific job they are built for: keeping a hard set of rows, shrugs or deadlift back-offs about the muscle, not the hands. Match the tool to the set and you get the benefit of each without the downside.
What are the most common lifting strap mistakes?
The usual mistakes are strapping every set including warm-ups, wrapping the strap the wrong direction so it unwinds, using straps too loose or far too tight, and never doing any raw grip work. Each one either wastes the tool or quietly weakens the grip you are trying to protect.
- Strapping every set, warm-ups included. — If the bar never touches a raw grip, your hands never get trained. Save straps for the sets where grip is genuinely the limiter.
- Wrapping the wrong direction. — Wrap so the bar rolling into your fingers tightens the strap. Wrap the other way and the tail unwinds mid-set — the most common cause of a dropped bar.
- Straps too long or too loose. — Slack means the bar slips and the wrist pinches. Take up the excess so the wrap is snug against the bar before your first rep.
- Using straps to fake a lift you cannot hold. — A strapped deadlift is not a raw deadlift. If you compete or test raw, a strapped number is training feedback, not a true personal record.
- Never training grip at all. — Straps plus zero grip work is why so many big-back lifters have a weak grip. Keep some raw sets and add dedicated holds or carries each week.
- Cranking them brutally tight for high reps. — On a 20-rep set, a death-tight wrap kills blood flow and wrist comfort. Snug is enough — you want security, not a tourniquet.
None of these are complicated to fix. Straps are a tool with one job: let the target muscle train past the point where your grip quits. Use them on the sets that need it, keep some honest raw work in the week, and log the extra volume so it actually drives progressive overload rather than just feeling productive.
