What muscles does the sumo squat work?

How grip and angle change muscle activation

Electromyography (EMG) research on wide-stance squats gives a mixed but useful picture. These findings are approximate — use them to guide stance choice, not as exact activation numbers.

What are the key sumo squat form cues?

Stance width & toe angle
Step your feet out to roughly 1.5–2x shoulder width and turn your toes out 30–45°. Too narrow a stance and toe angle turns the sumo squat into a regular squat with a less stable base.
Knee tracking
Push your knees out in the same direction as your toes throughout the descent. Letting the knees drift inward loses tension in the adductors and stresses the knee joint.
Torso position
Keep your chest tall and your ribcage stacked over your pelvis. Because the stance is wide, you don't need to hinge forward the way you do in a narrow squat.
Weight through the whole foot
Keep weight spread across your whole foot, with slightly more pressure through your heels. Rising onto your toes shifts work off the glutes and adductors and onto the quads and calves.
Depth
Lower until your thighs are at least parallel to the floor, or as deep as you can go while keeping your lower back neutral and your heels down.

Breathing & tempo: Take a breath and brace your core at the top before descending, hold it through the bottom, and exhale as you drive back up past the hardest part of the rep. A controlled 2-1-1 tempo (2s down, 1s pause at the bottom, 1s up) builds control and keeps tension on the glutes and inner thighs.

How should you warm up for the sumo squat?

Warm up with 1–2 sets of bodyweight sumo squats and a set of banded lateral walks or hip/adductor mobility drills (deep sumo-stance rocks, 90/90 hip stretch) to open the hips before adding a dumbbell. Once your hips feel loose, do one light dumbbell set of 10–12 reps to groove the stance before your working sets.

What are the most common sumo squat mistakes?
