How does concurrent training actually work?
Concurrent training is any program that develops strength and endurance in the same phase. It works because both adaptations respond to training, but the two can compete: adding heavy endurance to a strength program tends to blunt strength and power gains slightly — the interference effect — driven by both acute fatigue and rival molecular signals.
The key evidence here is Schumann and colleagues 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis, which pooled concurrent versus strength-only training and found that concurrent training can attenuate gains in muscle power and, to a smaller degree, hypertrophy, while maximal strength is more protected. [1] The size of the effect is not fixed. Fyfe, Bishop and Stepto laid out how it swings with the individual training variables — endurance modality, intensity, volume and the recovery between sessions all move the needle. [2] That is good news: interference is something you program around, not a wall.
Put plainly, the endurance side is the one that intrudes on strength, not the reverse. Heavy, low-volume lifting adds very little fatigue to a run and often improves running economy. Block, concurrent or undulating: which model?
Three periodization models fit hybrid training. Block sequences one quality at a time across 3-5 week phases. Concurrent trains both every week, all year. Undulating keeps both in the week but rotates the emphasis day to day. Block minimises interference; concurrent maximises convenience; undulating sits between them.
There is no single winner. Williams and colleagues 2017 meta-analysis found periodized resistance training produced greater maximal strength gains than non-periodized training, but the differences between periodization models themselves were modest. [4] In other words, having a structured plan with a deliberate emphasis matters more than the exact flavour of periodization you pick. Choose the model that fits your calendar and your ability to recover.

Most hybrid athletes end up running a hybrid of the models: concurrent week structure — because life demands both qualities stay ticking — with a block-style shift in emphasis every few weeks. What does a good weekly layout look like?
A workable concurrent week separates hard strength and hard endurance onto different days, alternates stress so no two brutal sessions stack back to back, and protects at least one rest day. A six-day template pairs two to three lifting days with two to four running or riding sessions, keeping the two qualities apart.
The organising rule is separation. Every day you can put heavy lifting and hard intervals on different dates, you reduce the acute fatigue that feeds interference. When they must share a day, they should sit on opposite ends of it. Notice the pattern: the hardest lower-body lifting (Monday, Friday) never sits the day before or after the hardest endurance quality (Tuesday threshold, Saturday long). In what order should you train each quality?
When strength and endurance land in the same session, put your priority quality first, while you are fresh. Lift before you run on a strength day; run before you lift on an endurance day. If both matter equally, split them into two sessions at least six hours apart — separation is the strongest lever you have against interference.
Intra-session order matters because whatever comes second inherits the fatigue of what came first. Eddens, van Someren and Howatson 2018 meta-analysis examined exactly this and concluded that exercise sequence within a session influences the acute interference on strength and power, so the quality you care about most should generally go first. One nuance worth keeping honest: the order effect is smaller than the separation effect. If you can put lifting in the morning and running in the evening, that beats agonising over which goes first in a single crammed session. When a same-session pairing is unavoidable, lead with the hard effort for your priority quality and let the second slot become lighter, quality-controlled work.

How do you autoregulate and manage fatigue?
Autoregulation means adjusting each session to how you actually feel that day rather than obeying a fixed number on paper. In concurrent training, where fatigue arrives from two directions, steering by RPE and reps in reserve keeps you productive on good days and stops you digging a hole on bad ones.
The tools are simple. RPE rates how hard a set felt on a 1-10 scale; reps in reserve counts how many reps you had left. On a day when yesterday's long run left your legs flat, you hit the same RPE target with less load and stop there — no ego, no dug hole. Worth a caveat from the evidence: Halperin and colleagues 2022 review found that lifters predict their reps-to-failure with meaningful error, especially far from failure, so treat RIR as a useful gauge, not a precise instrument. Practically, cap most strength work at 1-3 reps in reserve and keep the bulk of your endurance easy — the classic mostly-easy, occasionally-hard distribution. Watch for the fatigue signals that concurrent training amplifies: stalling lifts, a resting heart rate that will not settle, sleep going ragged, and the same paces suddenly feeling harder. How often should you deload?
Deload roughly every four to six weeks when training both qualities, or sooner if fatigue is obviously stacking. Cut total volume by 40-60 percent while keeping some intensity so you stay sharp. Because concurrent training loads you from two directions, planned lighter weeks matter more here than in a single-goal program.
A deload is not lost time — it is when buried adaptations finally surface. Fatigue masks fitness, so the week you back off is often the week your true strength and freshest legs reappear. The simplest version: drop your working sets by roughly half, keep the loads moderately heavy but the reps crisp, cut endurance volume by 40-50 percent, and drop the hard intervals entirely. You are trimming volume, not going to bed.
Time the deload to close a mesocycle — the 3-5 week accumulation-to-intensification arc — rather than dropping it in randomly. Worked example: a strength-priority mesocycle
A strength-priority mesocycle keeps heavy lifting as the main event and holds endurance at a maintenance dose. Over four weeks, strength volume and intensity climb while endurance stays deliberately small — two easy aerobic sessions and one short interval — then everything backs off in a week-four deload so the strength gains surface.
This block suits a lifter or powerbuilder who wants to keep a base of conditioning without giving up the barbell. The endurance is there to hold aerobic fitness and support recovery, not to progress — so it stays easy and low, and it never sits right before a heavy lower-body day. Worked example: an endurance-priority mesocycle
An endurance-priority mesocycle makes running or riding the main event and drops strength to a low, heavy maintenance dose. Over four weeks, endurance volume and quality climb toward a peak while strength shrinks from two sessions to one — enough to hold most of your strength — before a week-four deload freshens the legs.
This block suits a runner, cyclist or triathlete who wants to keep the strength they have built without letting the gym eat into running recovery. The trick is that maintenance strength is cheap: one to two short sessions of low-rep, heavy work holds most of your strength for weeks, and low reps add little fatigue to your legs. Keep the loads heavy and the volume small so the barbell supports the endurance rather than competing with it.

What are the biggest programming mistakes?
The mistakes that wreck concurrent programs are almost always the same handful: chasing both qualities at maximum at once, stacking hard sessions without separation, never biasing a block, skipping deloads, ignoring autoregulation, and piling on volume when progress stalls. Fix these before reaching for any fancy method.
- Chasing both at maximum at once. — You cannot peak strength and endurance in the same block. Rank one as the priority and let the other sit at maintenance — one to two sessions holds a quality for weeks.
- Hard intervals right before heavy lifting. — A brutal interval session drains the legs and blunts every squat that follows. Separate them by hours, or put the lifting on a different day.
- No block bias. — Running an identical concurrent week for months means both qualities creep along slowly. Bias one goal for 3-5 weeks, then switch the emphasis.
- Skipping deloads. — Concurrent training stacks fatigue from two directions. Without a lighter week every 4-6 weeks, adaptations stay buried under accumulated tiredness.
- Fixed loads, no autoregulation. — A number on paper does not know you slept badly and ran hard yesterday. Steer daily work by RPE and reps in reserve, not a rigid percentage.
- Adding volume to both when progress stalls. — More is not the answer when you are already fatigued. Cut the non-priority quality back first, recover, then push the one that matters.
None of these are exotic. Good concurrent programming is mostly disciplined scheduling: keep the qualities apart, rank one at a time, respect fatigue, and let deloads do their job. The athletes who succeed at both are rarely doing more work than everyone else — they are doing it in a smarter order.
