What are volume landmarks?
Volume landmarks are four reference points for weekly training volume, measured in hard sets per muscle: MV, MEV, MAV and MRV. Coined by the Renaissance Periodization team, they turn the vague advice to do enough sets into a personal range you can target, progress through, and reset every training block.
The framework rests on a simple, well-supported idea: training volume drives hypertrophy in a dose-response fashion, but only up to the point you can recover from. Schoenfeld, Ogborn and Krieger's 2017 meta-analysis of 15 studies found a graded relationship, with higher-volume groups gaining roughly 3.9% more muscle than lower-volume groups, and each additional weekly set adding about 0.37% to the effect. [1] Landmarks simply carve that curve into usable zones. A hard working set is the unit of measurement — count only sets taken within a few reps of failure, not warm-ups or sloppy half-reps.
A word of honesty up front: the exact landmark numbers you will see below are educated estimates built from research plus a lot of coaching experience, not values pulled from a single trial. What MV, MEV, MAV and MRV actually mean.
Maintenance volume (MV) is the least weekly work that holds muscle. Minimum effective volume (MEV) is the least that grows it. Maximum adaptive volume (MAV) is the productive band where you gain the most per set. Maximum recoverable volume (MRV) is the highest volume you can still recover from before performance declines.
Think of the four as a staircase. Below MV, you lose tissue. Between MV and MEV, you hold but do not build. Between MEV and MRV lies the growth zone, and MAV marks the sweet spot inside it where the return on each extra set is highest. Cross MRV and you are accumulating more fatigue than you can clear, which is where junk volume lives — sets that cost recovery without buying growth.

The ranges above are per muscle, per week, and they overlap on purpose — one lifter's MEV can sit where another's MAV begins. The maximum recoverable volume is the most individual of the four, because it depends on sleep, nutrition, stress, and how many other muscles you are hammering at the same time.
Per-muscle volume landmark ranges.
Different muscles tolerate very different volumes. Larger muscles like back and side delts often handle 20-plus weekly sets, while smaller or heavily-fatiguing muscles like triceps and hamstrings top out sooner. The estimates below are evidence-informed starting points, not fixed prescriptions — treat them as a map, then chart your own coordinates.

Two caveats keep these numbers honest. First, indirect volume counts: rows train biceps, presses train triceps, so a back-and-chest day quietly adds arm sets you should not double-count. Second, these figures assume the sets are hard and well-executed — Baz-Valle and colleagues' 2021 review concluded that counting total hard sets is a valid way to quantify volume, but only when effort is high. [4] If your sets stop 5 reps shy of failure, your real landmarks sit lower than any table says.
Higher training volumes tend to produce more hypertrophy up to a point, but the effect is not unlimited and depends on the lifter recovering from the work. As Baz-Valle et al. summarised, "greater weekly volumes are associated with greater hypertrophy," with the strongest evidence in the roughly 12-to-20-set range for trained individuals. [3]
How to find your MEV.
To find your minimum effective volume, start a new block at a modest weekly set count, watch how each muscle responds, and add sets to anything that is not growing or pumping. Your MEV is the lowest weekly volume that still produces a clear stimulus and week-to-week progression — usually around 6 to 10 hard sets for most muscles.
The practical process is deliberately conservative: it is easier to add volume than to dig out of a fatigue hole. Follow these three steps at the start of a mesocycle.
- Start low. Open a new block at the low end of the MAV range for each muscle — for most people that is 8-12 hard sets a week.
- Judge the response. If you get a clear pump, recover fully by the next session, and add reps or load, that volume is working. If nothing moves, you are likely under MEV.
- Nudge up. Add 2-3 sets a week to any muscle that feels under-stimulated. The dose where growth and progression appear is your working MEV.
Signs you are below MEV: no pump, no soreness, no reps or load being added, and a muscle that simply is not changing month over month. How to find your MRV.
To find your maximum recoverable volume, add sets across a block until recovery starts to fail, then note the volume just before it broke. MRV is the highest weekly set count you can still recover from — you locate it by its warning signs: dropping strength, fading pumps, worsening sleep, and a muscle that is still sore when its next session arrives.
You do not find MRV with a formula; you find it by carefully overshooting it once. Push volume up week over week and read the following signals as they appear.

When two or three of these show up together and persist, you have brushed MRV — that is your cue to deload, not to grind harder. This is where volume research meets diminishing returns: Schoenfeld's 2019 trial found that very high set counts produced more hypertrophy than low ones in trained men, but the strength benefits flattened and recovery cost rose, a reminder that more volume is not free. [2] Crucially, exceeding MRV briefly causes short-term functional overreaching, which a deload reverses within days — it is not the same as true overtraining, which takes weeks of unmanaged overload to develop.
How to progress volume across a mesocycle.
Across a mesocycle, start each muscle near its MEV and add roughly two to three hard sets per week, climbing through MAV toward MRV over four to six weeks. Then deload back to maintenance. Starting low leaves room for progressive overload; ending high, right before a reset, extracts the last productive sets before fatigue wins.
The logic is that a fixed weekly volume either starts too high to progress or too low to grow. Ramping solves both. Here is a worked example for chest, moving from MEV up to a brief overreach, then a deload — the same shape applies to any muscle, just shifted to its own numbers.

Notice that volume and effort rise together: sets go up while reps in reserve come down, so week 5 is genuinely hard and week 1 is genuinely easy. Split each week's volume across two or three sessions rather than one brutal day — Schoenfeld's frequency meta-analysis found training a muscle at least twice a week produced superior growth to once weekly on a volume-matched basis. How to deload and reset your volume.
A deload cuts weekly volume back toward maintenance for about a week so accumulated fatigue clears and adaptations surface. Drop hard sets by roughly half, keep the load moderate but the effort easy (4-5 reps in reserve), and treat it as the essential bottom step that resets your landmarks for the next block.
Deloading is not optional padding — it is the mechanism that makes the whole framework work. Volume landmarks assume you climb, then reset; skip the reset and MRV slowly falls as fatigue stacks up, until the same sets that grew you last month barely maintain you. During a deload week, halve your set count to around your maintenance volume, stop every set well short of failure, and keep moving so you retain skill and blood flow without adding fatigue.
Most lifters deload every four to six hard weeks, but the honest answer is that fatigue, not the calendar, decides. If the MRV warning signs from earlier show up in week four, deload in week four. Why your volume landmarks are individual.
Volume landmarks are personal, not universal. Your MEV and MRV depend on training age, muscle group, sleep, nutrition, life stress, exercise selection, and how many other muscles you train hard in the same week. Two lifters following the same table can need double the sets of each other for the same result.
Several factors move the numbers, and they move together. Better sleep and a calorie surplus raise your MRV; a hard cut or a stressful month lowers it. Advanced lifters generally tolerate and require more volume than beginners, so both MEV and MRV rise with experience — the volume that grew you two years ago may now sit at maintenance. Exercise choice matters too: a set of high-fatigue failure-adjacent squats taxes recovery far more than a set of cable lateral raises, so the same "10 sets" is not the same dose everywhere.
This is exactly why the published tables are ranges, and why coaches who use this framework insist on testing rather than obeying. Baz-Valle and colleagues' reviews landed on broad volume recommendations precisely because the individual variation is large. Common volume-landmark mistakes.
The usual mistakes are starting a block at the ceiling, treating estimated numbers as laws, counting junk sets as real volume, never deloading, and living at MRV every week. Each one breaks the ramp-and-reset logic that makes landmarks useful in the first place.
- Starting a block at MRV. — If week one already uses your maximum recoverable volume, you have nowhere to progress. Start near MEV and add sets over the mesocycle so overload has room to run.
- Treating the numbers as universal laws. — Published landmark tables are population estimates, not your personal readout. Your MEV for back might be someone else's MRV. Test and adjust from the ranges, do not obey them.
- Counting junk volume as real sets. — Half-range, low-effort sets inflate your count without adding stimulus. Only hard sets taken within a few reps of failure count toward a landmark.
- Never deloading. — Volume landmarks assume you reset. If you sit at MAV for months with no deload, fatigue accumulates until MRV quietly drops and progress stalls.
- Chasing MRV every week. — Maximum recoverable volume is a ceiling to approach late in a block, not a weekly target. Most growth happens in the MAV band, not at the edge of collapse.
- Ignoring per-muscle differences. — Side delts and back tolerate far more volume than triceps or hamstrings. One flat number across every muscle wastes some and buries others.
